Christina Di Carlo

(She/Her)
Chair of the Board

Christina started her climate activism journey as a general member at Shake Up The Establishment and played a vital role in creating our initial resources and political party comparison chart. She was eventually promoted to Director of Research followed by Chief Research Officer, where she was recognized as Canada’s Top 30 Under 30 Sustainability Leaders in Canada by Corporate Knights. She joined the Board of Directors in 2022. Academically, she obtained her Masters of Public Health and is currently pursuing her Medical Degree at the University of Ottawa. She hopes to have a career where she can adequately address the social determinants of health that are exacerbated by the climate crisis.

Dr. Komil Bhalla

Member of the Board

Dr. Komil Bhalla received her dental degree (B.D.S.) in 1997 and completed her Masters in Prosthodontics in 2001, both at GDCH Ahmedabad, in India. She then obtained her D.D.S. degree to practice Dentistry in Canada at the University of Western Ontario, in 2007. Dr. Komil Bhalla has also been certified by the University of Toronto in Moderate Sedation for dental procedures. Together with her husband, the Drs. Bhalla opened their dental offices, MM Family and Sleep Dentistry, in 2007. Over the years, Dr. Bhalla has continued to maintain her deep interest in empowering women and increasing representation of women of colour in leadership. As a business owner, she puts community at the heart of her work and often holds events benefitting the health & wellbeing of children and families.

Janaya Campbell

Secretary, Co-Founder

Janaya is a co-founder of SUTE and is a member of the Board of Directors. Alongside the co-founding team, she was a recipient of Corporate Knights’ 2020 Top 30 Under 30 in Sustainability. She graduated in 2019 from the University of Guelph (where SUTE began!) with a BA in Art History and Arts Management. From there she moved on to the University of Toronto where she graduated with her MA in Child Study and Education and her teaching degree. She’s currently living and teaching in what is currently Toronto.

Taro Halfnight

(He/Him)
Treasurer, Co-Founder

Taro co-founded SUTE in 2019 and now serves as the organization’s Chief Financial Officer. Taro brings unique perspectives to SUTE as an indigenous youth of the Simpcw First Nation born and raised in rural BC and an experienced Wildfire Crew Leader. Outside of SUTE he works in healthcare administration and holds a BSc. Hons. degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Guelph.

Manvi Bhalla

(She/Her)
Executive Director, Member of Board of Directors & Co-Founder

Manvi (she/her) is an activist-scholar with extensive intersectional community organizing experience. She is recognized as one of Canada’s ‘Top 25 Under 25’ environmentalists, ‘Top 30 Under 30’ sustainability leaders and was honoured with the ‘Youth Eco-Hero of the Year’ award in 2022. She co-founded Shake Up The Establishment, a national nonprofit dedicated to climate justice & political advocacy, alongside missINFORMED, a nonprofit focused on health promotion for women and gender-diverse peoples. She serves on numerous advisory committees including UBC’s Robson Square, FES’ The Harbour and Youth Climate Corps. Alongside her advocacy work, Manvi is a published health researcher, frequent public speaker and guest lecturer who works to centre anti-colonial approaches. During her MSc, she investigated barriers towards climate action within the public health sector. Presently, she is a PhD student at University of British Columbia with SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship funding. Her research interests include intersectional health policy making & environmental justice.

Neha Dhanvanthry

Neha worked on projects focused on sustainability and community well-being, leading to an interest in social and environmental health. She completed her undergraduate degree in Life Sciences at McMaster University, and is currently completing her Master of Public Health at the University of Waterloo. She joined SUTE in 2023 and helps out with funding activities for the organization which led her to her current role of CFO.

Elaine Li

Chief Communications Officer

Elaine has always been involved in her community through various extracurricular activities throughout high school and university. From her undergraduate studies at the University of Guelph she developed a passion and interest for a sustainable future. She has been a part of SUTE as a general member since the summer of 2021 and has continued her climate activism journey which has led her to her previous Director position and current Executive position. When she’s not volunteering her time she can be found watching Asian dramas and being a tourist whenever she can.

Mei-Ling Patterson

Chief Research Officer

Mei-Ling is passionate about climate and environmental justice and co-authored Shake Up The Establishment’s self-published book, Practicing Rest, Recovery, Resistance: An Interactive Dreaming Journal. The book is filled with 40+ interactive activities centred on intersectionality, systems-thinking, and radical reimagination to support coping with eco-grief. The book has now sold 500+ copies and has been carried in local, independent bookstores across so-called Canada including A Different Booklist, Another Story Bookshop, Iron Dog Books, Octopus Books, Massy Books, and Upstart & Crow.

Mei-Ling has 4+ years of experience in Canada’s environmental non-profit sector working and volunteering with organizations such as The Jane Goodall Institute of Canada, Shake Up The Establishment, The Starfish Canada, Experiences Canada, the Rexdale Community Hub, Let’s Talk Science, Together | Ensemble at the University of Waterloo, and the UBC Journal for Climate Justice.

She’s a MASc graduate of the Environmental Applied Science and Management program at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU). Her master’s research focused on Migrant Integration in Canada’s Growing Environmental Sector: Barriers and Opportunities for Strengthening Diversity & Inclusion. On behalf of the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Migration and Integration she was awarded a 2-year scholarship to complete this research (total: $20,000). She also holds a BA (Honours) with distinction from TMU’s Environment and Urban Sustainability program with a minor in French Studies.

Anna Huschka

Director of Policy & Research

Anna started with SUTE in January 2020 and was recently promoted to Director of Policy Interventions. Over the last four years, Anna has helped to develop resources on topics across climate justice, was a leading researcher as a part of our #NotVotingFckingSucks campaign, and has responded to calls for feedback on federal climate policies and projects. Anna graduated in 2022 from the University of Guelph with a BSCH, majoring in Biological Science and minoring in Political Science, in which she was able to obtain not only a scientific understanding of the impacts of climate change, but also a political understanding of how decisions are being made and policies are being developed, in order to identify the best points at which change can occur.

Angelo Maurer

Director of Community Engagement

Angelo is a passionate community leader and climate justice advocate who believes in the power of community and relationality as our saving grace. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science & International Relations from The University of British Columbia, and has more than 3 years of experience in the realm of social-ecological justice and advocacy, educational programming, and community engagement. In hopes of alternative futures, Angelo has enjoyed acting as a public speaker, researcher, storyteller, advocate, and facilitator. Angelo joined SUTE in the summer of 2023, and he is currently the Director of Community Engagement at Shake Up The Establishment. He works with the Shake Up Your Community program where he has been involved in collaborating with the BC-based Sue Big Oil and BC Climate Emergency campaigns. They also work to respond to and organize around community-identified needs related to climate justice.

Asha Swann

Director of Communications

Asha is a freelance writer, journalist, graphic designer, photographer and editor based outside Toronto. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism from Toronto Metropolitan University (previously known as Ryerson) and a college diploma in journalism from Sheridan College. Her work surrounds ideas of sustainability, climate change, feminism, food systems, politics, race, queerness and the ways identity can intersect and add rich complexity to our lives. She has been vegan since 2016 but has cared about the environment for her whole life. You can read her work online at ashaswann.com

Megan Devoe

(She/Her)
Policy Researcher

Megan is an activist-scholar currently living on the unceded territories of the Mi’kma’ki people in what is colonially known as Halifax, Nova Scotia. She is a white settler with mixed Mi’kmaw and European heritage. Megan’s work, at SUTE and beyond, are inspired by the disconnect she feels between the environment and humanity. She is currently a PhD candidate in the Labour Studies department at McMaster University. Her research focuses on the perceptions and experiences of just transition policies among workers and communities in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia who depend on fossil fuel extraction for economic survival, but at a distance through patterns of long-distance commuting. Megan also holds a BA in Environmental Studies from Toronto Metropolitan University and an MA in Globalization and the Human Condition from McMaster University.

Natasha Haider

Natasha is a Graphic Designer dedicated to conveying an impactful message through a creative and artistic lens. Open to all mediums, Natasha is specially driven in making meaningful designs that evoke emotion and encourage thoughtful reflection.

Aliya Hirji

(she/they/elle/iel)
Campaigns & Events Coordinator
Aliya Hirji (she/they) is a community organizer and environmentalist originally from Toronto/Tkaronto, now living in so-called Vancouver as a Campaigns & Events Coordinator at Shake Up The Establishment. They studied politics at Sciences Po and are now at UBC studying geography and coordinating a research project for increasing access to parks and natural spaces. They can be found reading in a nearby park or lost on public transit somewhere in Vancouver.

Iris Molony Everett

(They/Them)
Junior Designer

Iris is an aspiring activist and recent high school graduate. She’s interested in science and the arts, and is hoping to find work supporting underserved communities as a paramedic or pursuing their interests in forensic science/anthropology. Iris participates in social and climate justice at the arts high school they attended (where she studies drawing and painting, graphic design, and non-traditional art), but is always looking to get more involved and have a bigger impact.

Jane Pangilinan

Funding & Development Coordinator

Jane is passionate about the environment. She loves learning about ecology, policy, and climate justice. With experience from working with environmental nonprofits and her ongoing studies, Jane hopes to connect others to nature and social justice. She completed her undergraduate degree in the Environment, Resources and Sustainability program at the University of Waterloo and is continuing to study at Seneca College. Jane has been a member of SUTE since July 2023 and was part of the Shake Up Your Community program where she collaborated with the Ontario Climate Emergency Campaign (OCEC) and the Canadian Coalition for Environmental  & Climate Justice (CCECJ).

Nicola Radatus-Smith

Campaigns and Events Coordinator

Nicola is a researcher and environmental activist, currently developing papers on climate justice in municipal climate action. She has recently graduated with an MSc in sustainability management from the University of Toronto and a BSc in Biology from the University of Windsor. She is a recent volunteer of SUTE having started in summer 2023. She works with the Shake Up Your Communities (SUYC) program where she has been involved with collaborating with the Climate Emergency Unit and supporting their Youth Climate Corps Toronto campaign.

Michael Redston

Webstore Manager

Mike Redston is a dedicated sales and marketing professional with a passion for driving positive change within the environmental movement. Holding a BCom in Entrepreneurship from the University of Victoria, he brings a robust background in sales including years of experience working in the nonprofit sector. As an outdoor enthusiast who cherishes exploring local forests and mountains, Mike’s commitment to environmental causes is rooted in a deep connection with nature since childhood. When not engaged with SUTE or hiking, Mike finds joy in creating music and pursuing artistic endeavours.

Zeina Seaifan

(She/Her)
Policy Researcher

Both an academic and an aspiring environmental activist, Zeina is incredibly passionate about supporting collective action around the disproportionate impacts of climate change and environmental degradation on marginalized communities. In 2023, she completed her Master’s in Environment and Sustainability at the University of Toronto, specializing in the intersection between Social Sustainability and Diasporic & Transnational Communities. Her master’s thesis explored how Toronto’s racialized diasporic communities were able to participate in sustainability via non-profit community centres. At SUTE, Zeina is excited to leverage her traditional and non-traditional experiences, both within and beyond academia, to help create transformative systemic changes around a climate-just future!

Chloe Wu

(She/Her)
Outreach Lead

Chloe is a jack of all trades, having navigated between industries and developed a blend of human-centered design and a commitment to environmental and social justice. Rooted in intentionality and resilience, she leverages her interdisciplinary background in chemistry, management and design to bridge gaps between science and the broader strokes of advocacy. As of 2024, Chloe is pursuing a MSc in Sustainability Management at the University of Toronto, which has driven her to explore sustainability through a holistic lens, recognizing the web of interdependent relationships that define our world. Beyond her endeavors, Chloe is driven by a natural curiosity for the world around her, spanning from the natural beauty of waterfalls to the cultural richness of food, history and photography.

Celeste Alcena

Casual Volunteer

Celeste (she/they) is a community organizer, musical artist and wellness practitioner graciously growing roots on Algonquin territory (Ottawa) over the past 8 years, with ancestral roots and lineages in the Bahamas and China (Hong Kong). They’re a passionate dreamer, on a path to nurture creative spaces for care and spiritual guidance, particularly for QTBIPOC youth. This inspires her work as a founding and current member of the Pass the Vibes collective, creating space for Black youth to connect and explore their creativity. Celeste works with sound, movement practice, and alongside the Earth to support folks in reclaiming a deeper connection to their inner magic and to the magic of lands & waters close to them.

Hayley Brackenridge

Hayley is SUTE’s Chief Development Officer and has been a member of the organization since 2020. She holds a BSc. Hons. in Biology from Queen’s University and MSc. in Plant Agriculture from the University of Guelph. Outside of SUTE, Hayley is a coordinating biologist at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada where she works in the field of integrated pest management and pesticide risk reduction.

Aarisha Elvi Haider

(She/Her)
Casual Volunteer

Aarisha has a background in Political Science from the University of British Columbia. All throughout her studies in university, she felt there was a disconnect between academia and collective action until she found herself participating in a global seminar in Peru that introduced her to the concept of Rights of Nature– a concept which would later shape her passion for social and climate justice. Living and learning from the Indigenous Kichwa-Lamista community, that experience not only left an imprint moving forward with her activism but also her way of life on how to hold space. With an interest in decolonizing policies, Aarisha tends to bridge knowledge gaps with on-going education by collectively learning, story-telling and inter-cultural dialogue.
