Climate Change Accountability Act (Bill C-224) came into effect in Canada on June 15th, 2011 (1).
Purpose: to ensure that Canada meets its global climate change obligations as per the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This includes a long-term commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% below 1990 levels by 2050, with interim targets for the period 2015 to 2045 (1).
The adoption of this act creates an obligation on the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development to review proposed goals, meet the targets, and follow up with a report submission to Parliament (1).
